You ask ‘I’m interested in hearing thoughts about what an agrarian local livelihood economy might look like in the Highlands. I agree on the need for land reform, but what comes after interests me.’ I don’t have an answer but I do wonder if checking out how people are using the land on the western isles might be a good place to start. It’s the only place where communtiy owned land has become the norm.

I’m also curious what kind of land reform it is you support? The two main policies I’m aware of are community buyouts, which happen already on a small scale, and the Scottish greens yet unrealised land reform tax. I imagine there are other ways government can peacefully encourage redistribution of land so it’s not really one thing, even if SNP often talk like it is.

This was a very enjoyable read and I loved a lot of your takes. Not familiar w the highlands but it was nice in any case. You said that the highlands are unaffordable bc of renewables and rewilding etc - is that true? If so, how do you mean?

Also, I think, re your take on learning skills vs communicating urgency to get mass bodies on board—one might lead to the other? If more and more people build these skills bc of world events and climate change etc, won’t that get further and further into the zeitgeist/norms so that the latter is more possible?

I enjoyed following along with the hike. Your comment about the proliferation of English accents in the Highlands reminded me of our Memorial Day cookout. I listened to three Yankees discuss the source of the best Tennessee BBQ. The winner they all agreed on was based on an article in a newspaper from Cincinnati, Ohio. Surely I don't need to unpack the many problems with that account. And, I'm sure we are all "feeling the pull of the mountains" lately.

I love ironing and I love flattened textiles, so my future-fantasy involves a pedal-powered generator to enable my ironing to continue.
